Contrary to popular belief, making the playoffs is no easy feat.  Of the eleven Webster City Football squad that have done so, five have been defeated in the 1st Round of the Class 3A playoffs.  However, despite the opening round defeat, it is fact that from 1972-1984, only eight (8) 3A schools qualified for the playoffs and to do so, a team literally had to go undefeated—and such that the first team in Lynx history to qualify for the playoffs was the 1982 squad that went 9-0. 

In 1985 the Iowa High School Athletic Association expanded the playoffs by doubling the number of qualifiers and such that, 16 teams could take a shot at winning a state title.  This number of qualifiers stood until 2008 when the number of playoff qualifiers was increased from 16 to 32.
