Bob
Howard
HEAD COACH
Webster City Head Football Coach Bob Howard enters his fifth season leading
the Lynx. A native of Madrid, Iowa, Howard previously coached at
Sigourney-Keota from 1978-2006 where he won three Class 2A state titles in
1995, 2001, and 2005. As well, his Savage Cobras qualified for the playoffs
ten other times. Coach Howard has earned numerous honors throughout the
course of his career which include being inducted into the Iowa High School
Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1995 while also being named the Iowa
Football Coaches Association “Coach of the Year” in both 1995 and 2001.
Hired in the spring of 2007 to resurrect a once-proud-but-now-dormant
program, Howard’s wealth of experience and knowledge had an immediate impact
upon Lynx football. Installing his vaunted single wing
offense, the 2007 Lynx squad responded by rushing for over 2200 yards and
for the first time since 2003, the Lynx defeated a team with a winning
record by knocking off Humboldt—the defending 3A state champions—27-20.
Although the Lynx only finished 3-6, his impact as the head coach was made
known.
For an encore in 2008, Webster City was picked by most "expert polls" to
finish near the bottom of District 2; however, after a close 22-21
non-District loss to Union-LaPorte City, the Lynx then won six of their next
seven games including a 50-14 drubbing over Iowa Falls-Alden to play for the
District Championship in the season finale against #2-ranked and undefeated
Clear Lake. Although the Lynx lost, 31-6, they finished as the District 2
Runner-up and in the Substate game against Dallas Center-Grimes, the Lynx’s
stout defense overshadowed its high-octane offense to win 20-6 to advance to
the Class 3A playoffs for the first time since 1996. In the 1st Round, the
Lynx found themselves down, 21-0, to a very good Carroll squad but battled
back to narrow the score to 28-20 in the second half before eventually
losing, 41-26, to finish 7-4 on the season.
In 2009, Webster City lost its opening game to Union of LaPorte City, 50-13,
but then rattled off five straight wins (for the first time since 1996)
including a come-from-behind 14-13 win over Eagle Grove; during this 5-game
win streak, Webster City outscored its last three opponents 90-12 including
a 35-0 pounding over Waverly-Shell Rock—the first time a Lynx defense
recorded a shutout since 2001. However, Webster City then hit a wall and
dropped the next 4 games including a 21-13 heartbreaker over rival Iowa
Falls. Although the Lynx finished third in the District and qualified for
the Substate game, they faced a very good Ballard-Huxley team and lost 37-7.
In 2010,
to no surprise, the Lynx were again been picked to
finish near or at the bottom of newly-aligned District 3 despite the return
of some key players. Of course, what happed was Webster City went 8-1
during the regular season with a lone loss to eventual District Champion
Clear Lake; this was the first time since 1994 the Lynx won eight (or more)
regular season games. In the 1st Round of the 3A playoffs, the Lynx
met a buzzsaw when they played Waverly-Shell Rock and bowed out with a 8-2
record. However, two juniors, RB Keagan Parks and OL Nick Errit,
earned All-State honors and with a large core group of returning players,
let's just say we'll wait to see what 2011 brings.

DON BURTON
ASSISTANT COACH
Don Burton is probably one of the best players ever to suit up for the Lynx as
he collected 16 letters—four each as a track, basketball, football, and baseball
player—during his high school career. One of the only freshmen to ever letter in
football, Burton’s career was full of great accomplishment; on the football
field as a senior, Burton rushed for 619 yards and threw for 487 for a total of
1,106 yards; however, more impressive is the 5,079 yards of total offense he
accumulated for the Lynx from 1950-53. A two-way starter, Don also was an
impressive linebacker in Harley Rollinger’s 5-4 scheme and is only 1 of 15 Lynx
preps to earn All-State honors twice: as a junior he was an Honorable Mention
All-State selection before being named to the 3rd Team as a senior. Don
ultimately decided to attend Iowa State on a football scholarship but
unfortunately during the third week of football practice as a freshmen, he
sustained a serious injury that ended his gridiron career. Burton then
returned to Webster City to attend Webster City Junior College where he played
both basketball and baseball. After two years Burton then transferred to
Northern Iowa from where he graduated in 1961. Don coached track for 24 years
and both football and basketball for 31 years coach whose stints include Fort
Dodge, Northeast Hamilton, and South Hamilton; Burton’s 1969 SHE squad took 3rd
at State while finishing with an overall record of 27-1 and his 1987 South
Hamilton squad were the State Runners-up. Don also had two other SH squads
qualify for State and he has won over 300 games as the boys’ basketball coach.

KENT
BAHRENFUSS
ASSISTANT COACH
Kent Bahrenfuss, a 1980 graduate of Webster City High School who played for
legendary Lynx coach Dick Tighe, is serving in his second coaching stint at his
alma mater. As a prep quarterback, Kent not only led the Lynx to back-to-back
6-3 seasons in 1978 and ’79, but in Tighe’s run-oriented offense, threw for 559
yards in ’79 which still ranks in the Top 10 of all Lynx passers. After
graduating from high school, Bahrenfuss attended the University of Iowa and
returned to the Lynx as a volunteer coach in 1985 and ’86 and then as a
full-time assistant from 1987-96. Kent, who is married to Diane, has two
children, Robyn and Kelsey, and three step-children: Dalton, Marlyn, and
Madeline. |

TIM
ANDERSON
ASSISTANT COACH
Tim Anderson, a 1984
graduate of Webster City High School, is living proof of Lynx Football history.
First, of the 110+ Webster City players who have earned All-State honors, Tim is only 1 of
15 Lynx players to do so twice: an
outstanding noseguard on defense, as a junior he landed on the 2nd Team squad in
1982 before earning 1st Team honors his senior year in 1983. Second, Tim
helped guide the 1982 Lynx to its first 9-0 record since 1970 and a berth into the
Class 3A playoffs—the Lynx’s first-ever playoff appearance
in school history.
The next season in 1983, Anderson again led Webster City to 9-0
regular season record en route to the school’s fifth consecutive North Central
Conference championship and another playoff qualification. The 1982
squad's defeat of St. Edmond in the 1st Round not only garnered the first
playoff win in school history, but also set new record for most
wins in a season that—to date—has only been matched by the 1985 and ’86 squads. Tim played in the 1984 Iowa Shrine Bowl All-Star game before suiting up for
legendary Iowa coach Hayden Fry from 1984-88 in which he was a four-year
letterman (1985-88) and was also part of five bowl teams: the ''84 Freedom Bowl,
'85 Rose Bowl, '86 Holiday Bowl, '87 Holiday Bowl, and '88 Peach Bowl. This is Tim’s second stint of coaching for the Lynx and
he first did so from 1991-97 with his former
high school coach, Dick Tighe. Anderson, who works at Town & Country Insurance
in Webster City, has three daughters with his wife, Kathy.

CLINT
HOWARD
ASSISTANT COACH
Clint Howard, son of Lynx Head Coach Bob Howard, joined the staff in 2009 and
his knowledge of the game, especially the Single Wing offense, will greatly help
Webster City. Clint is a 1999 graduate of Sigourney High School where he
played football for his father in 1996 and 1997. As a junior in 1996,
Clint quarterbacked the team to an 8-1 record and a 5-4 mark in 1998.
Coach Howard then attended Central College in Pella, IA, where he also played
football for two years. Clint coached for his father from 2005-06 before
taking over as Sigourney-Keota's Head Coach in 2007; that season, the first-year
head coach went 7-3 while also advancing to the 1st Round of the Class 2A
playoffs. Howard is in his first year of teaching at Hamilton Regional
High School and most recently played quarterback for Webster City’s own Minor
League football team, the Midwest Rampage, and helped lead the team to a 2-2
record before suffering a season-ending concussion. In the five games
Clint played for the Rampage, he passed for 735 yards and 7 touchdowns.
Clint is married to the former Jess Kaster, who is the Lynx’s head softball and volleyball coach,
and the two are expecting this first child early next year.
