However, the crown jewel of Chauncey’s career occurred in 1944,
his senior year, when he led the Lynx to an 8-0 record; during the season he rushed for 2,230 yards, passed for 855 yards, and scored 31 touchdowns along with 5 one-point conversions. Chauncey not only earned 1st Team All-State honors
by the Des Moines Register, but his 191 total points attracted national attention as he led all preps in the nation for points scored in relation to number of games played. Factoring in Chauncey’s seven aerial touchdowns and eight extra point passes, he accounted for 241 of his team’s 322 total points. Bill also earned four letters in basketball, track, and baseball.
After graduation, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served two years in World War II. After leaving the Navy, Chauncey then attended Iowa State where he earned his degree and was a four-year letterman on the football squad
from 1946-49. Bill twice led the Cyclones in rushing which not only included the single-season school record that stood until 1957, but during his senior year he led the conference in rushing despite missing the final two games. Chauncey was selected in the NFL draft by the Washington Redskins but opted to teach high school and coach football at Tipton where his teams won a conference championship. In 1958 he moved his family to Sioux City and became a sales representative for a pharmaceutical company and later became active in real estate and property management before passing away in 2004.
