Head Coaches
A long-time assistant football coach who earned Class 3A
“Assistant Coach of the Year” honors in 1996, Kennedy took over the football
program in 2002 after the untimely departure of Kurt Luhring. In his initial
season the Lynx went 1-8 but the following year, one in which he shared head
coaching duties with Jim Duncan, Dick led Webster City to a 5-4 campaign—only
the second time since 1996 the Lynx finished with a wining record.
Unfortunately, Dick was also diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2003 and resigned
after the season to focus on his health.
Kennedy also served as Webster City’s
head wrestling coach from 1989-2006 and earned numerous honors in that capacity
such as the
Iowa
Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association
Class 3A “Coach of the Year” award in 1991 and 2004. Under his direction, the
Lynx won two Class 3A district titles and four sectional crowns while leading 50
of his pupils to the state tournament, 22 of which earned state medals including state champions Erik Stroner (1991) and Jamie Taxted (1996 & 1997). As well, Dick’s 1991 team was the 3A state dual
runner-up while the 1996 squad took 3rd in 2A at the traditional state
tournament. Kennedy, who passed away in July of 2006 after a valiant three-year
battle with cancer, was posthumously inducted into the Iowa High School
Wrestling Association Hall of Fame in February of 2008.
DICK KENNEDY
2002-03
The late Dick Kennedy, a Webster City native, best epitomizes what being a Lynx
is all about. His father played football for Webster City from 1947-49 and Dick
followed in his footsteps as he starred for Webster City from 1971-73. A 1978
graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, Dick returned to his alma mater in
the fall of ’78 when he began teaching at Webster City Junior high in the
Science Department.
