Team records
November 3, 2010

Webster City loses 1st Round playoff game to Waverly-Shell Rock, 37-6, finishes 8-2
October 27, 2010

The #9-ranked Webster City Lynx bowed out to the #8-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks, 37-6, in the 1st Round of the Playoffs; set aside the cold and high winds, the Lynx still had a difficult time consistently moving the ball on offense as well as slowing the Go-Hawk's
formidable rushing attack and found themselves down 22-6 at halftime.  This game was unique in the fact that of the 96 playoff games occurring tonight, this was the only one that featured two ranked teams that were also 8-1.  Lynx Head Coach Bob Howard said of the game, "We have nothing to be ashamed of and sometimes you just have to give the other team credit:  Waverly-Shell Rock is a good team, their offensive linemen are quick and strong, and they run a good scheme.  I'm proud of the kids, especially the seniors, because they were picked to only win 2 or 3 games this season."  Webster City had their best season in 16 years by matching the 1994 squad's record of 8-2; as well, the 2010 Lynx had several notable highlights such as beating #5-ranked Ballard, 28-10, on the road while also being ranked #10 for several weeks before losing to Clear Lake.  However, after finishing the regular season 8-1, the Lynx were ranked in the final AP poll #9.  Congrats to the 2010 Lynx!

Lynx + Go-Hawks = Unique game
October 27, 2010

2010 playoff fact:  Of the 96 Iowa High School football playoff games being played tonight, only the match-up between the #9-ranked Webster City Lynx and the #8-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks feature (A) Ranked and (B) 8-1 teams playing one another!  Of course, this is the result of the new IAHSAA playoff system and it's not going to change so what we can all hope for is one heckofa game tonight!

#9Lynx to face #8Go-Hawks of Waverly-Shell Rock in 1st Round of Playoffs
October 23, 2010

The Webster City Lynx (8-1) will face the Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks (8-1) next Wednesday, October 27th, at 7:00 pm in Lynx Stadium in the 1st Round of the Class 3A Playoffs; the Lynx and Go-Hawks are no strangers to one another as they were district opponents from 2008-09.

Webster City routes Hampton-Dumont 54-14 to finish 8-1
October 22, 2010

The Webster City Lynx football squad completed the 2010 regular season with a 54-14 victory over Hampton-Dumont after leading 40-14 at halftime.  The '10 Lynx, who finished 6-1 in District play and 8-1 overall, is the first squad since 1994 to win eight (8) regular season games.  Against the Bulldogs, the Lynx's offense was virtually unstoppable as it scored on its first eight possessions and was led by RB Keagan Parks who scored a total of 6 touchdowns in the game--five of them rushing which tied a school record first established by Ray Andes in 1923 against Dows; Parks also tied a school record set in 1967 by Tim McKinney against Clarion when he returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown.  Overall, Webster City played an excellent game despite the tenacity of the Bulldogs.  The Lynx freshmen completed an undefeated season, 9-0, which is the second one in the past three years.

Lynx look to close out regular season in winning fashion with best regular season record since 1994
October 22, 2010

Despite securing a District Runner-up status and #2 seed in the upcoming Class 3A playoffs, Head Coach Bob Howard and the Lynx football squad seek their eight victory of the season against Hampton-Dumont.  The Lynx, 7-1 overall and 6-1 in District play, last won eight games during the regular season in 1994 and finished 8-2 after bowing out to Spencer in the 1st Round of the playoffs; the '96 squad also finished the season with 8 wins as they went 8-3 and advanced to the Quarterfinals before losing to Central Lyon.  Howard is currently 22-16 helming Webster City's program and of the 15 known head coaches in the history of the program, ranks 4th in total victories behind Dick Tighe, Harley Rollinger, and Robert Lamson--all whom coached 14 or more seasons for the Lynx.

Single wing offense works just fine as Lynx improve to 7-1 with 42-13 victory over Algona
October 15, 2010

The Webster City Lynx football squad improved its record to 7-1 with a sound 42-13 victory over the Algona Bulldogs who dropped to 1-7 overall.  The Lynx, 5-1 in District play, clinched both their second District Runner-up status in three seasons and a #2 Seed in the upcoming playoffs with their victory (along with a Clear Lake win over Hampton-Dumont).  Against Algona, Webster City not only took a commanding 28-0 halftime lead, but RB Keagan Parks rushed for 144 yards before intermission to eclipse the coveted 1,000 mark.  Ironically enough, Parks not only is the 24th player in 102 Lynx football seasons to rush for more than 1,000 (or more) yards, but he currently ranks 21st on the list as he has, to date, amassed 1,053 yards which is just one shy of what RB Matt Mattson ran for in 1982.  The Lynx close out the regular season at home next week against Hampton-Dumont before hosting the 1st Round Playoff game on Wednesday, October 27th.  In related news, the 9th grade team--which also happens to run the single wing offense--remained undefeated as they notched their eighth win of the season with a 36-21 come-from-behind win against the Bulldogs' frosh squad.

Lions blank Lynx, 35-0
October 8, 2010

The #3-ranked Clear Lake Lions were all business as they soundly defeated Webster City, 35-0, to spoil the Lynx's 2010 Homecoming.  Leading 7-0 after the 1st quarter, the bulk of the Lions' scoring came in the 2nd quarter in which they found the end zone on three different occasions to take a 28-0 halftime lead.  Although the Lynx improved their play in the second half, they never struck paydirt and suffered their first shutout since a 33-0 loss to New Hampton in Week #1 of the 2006 season.  "This isn't the end of the season or the world," said Head Coach Bob Howard, "the kids knew that before the game:  win or lose, this was just one game.  Sure, it would have been great to have a chance to go 9-0, but 8-1 is still pretty special and that's what they are going to strive and work for. Simply put, Clear Lake played better than us tonight and that's over... now we are focused on our next opponent, Algona."  The Lynx 9th grade squad improved their record to 7-0 after a 46-26 victory over the Lions' freshmen squad.

Webster City improves to 6-0 with 46-19 win over Humboldt, next faces 6-0 Clear Lake
October 2, 2010

The Lynx football squad improved its season record to 6-0 after recording a 46-19 victory over the Humboldt Wildcats. The win, coupled with Clear Lake's 35-0 victory over Ballard, puts #10-ranked Webster City into a position to play for the District 3 Championship as they now face the #3-ranked and 6-0 Clear Lake Lions this coming Friday in one of the biggest games Webster City has hosted in decades. "The players on this team have worked hard to be where they're at now," said Lynx Head Coach Bob Howard, "but they know that they need to keep improving because Clear Lake is an excellent team." Howard, in his fourth year of helming the Lynx's program, has led the team to their best start since 1988 and Webster City remains only 1 of 8 unbeaten teams in Class 3A.

Lynx beat Cubs 42-8, move to 5-0
September 24, 2010

Both the Webster City freshmen and varsity football squads improved their records to 5-0 after beating their grade-respective opponents the Nevada Cubs.  While the 9th graders won 32-6, the varsity squad defeated the Cubs 42-8 after leading 21-0 at halftime.  Webster City next plays the Humboldt Wildcats (1-4) who most recently lost to #2-ranked Clear Lake (5-0).

Webster City cracks AP Poll with #10 ranking
September 20, 2010

For the first time in a long time, the Webster City Lynx football team is ranked in Class 3A and entered the AP Poll in the #10 spot.  Now, aside from the historical significance of this ranking, what does this really mean?  Well, Woody Allen said it best:  "
I cannot abide by the judgment of other people, because if you accept it when they say you deserve an award, then you have to accept it when they say you don't."  'Nuff said... keep getting better boys!

Lynx outlast Toreadors, 32-22; improve to 4-0
September 17, 2010

For the first time since 1990, a Webster City football team has started the season 4-0 and did so tonight by notching a hard-fought 32-22 victory over Boone.  The Lynx found themselves down 7-0 after allowing the Toreadors to score on their first possession but then responded on their second drive to narrow the gap, 7-6, after a missed PAT.  Webster City then took a 13-6 lead after
RB Keagan Parks ripped off an 81-yard touchdown run.  However, prior to halftime the Toreadors then hit paydirt to take a 14-13 lead before halftime.  The Lynx opened up the second half by receiving the ball and KR Sam Mossman returned the kick deep inside Boone's territory; on the next play Parks again scored as the Lynx retook a 19-14 lead (after a failed 2-point conversion).  In the 3rd quarter Boone scored again to assume a 22-19 advantage.  In the 4th quarter Webster City's aerial game too flight and two strikes from QB Jonny Davis to WRs Mossman and Caleb Crouthamel witnessed the Lynx take a 25-22 and 32-22 lead, respectively.  "We didn't play the best but we still won," said Head Coach Bob Howard, "and if this team wants to keep winning, then they need to keep improving."  Before the varsity contest, the 9th Grade Lynx team defeated Boone, 40-12, to run their record to 4-0.  Next week Webster City faces the Nevada Cubs.

Big offensive plays and tough defense sparks Lynx victory over #5Ballard
September 10, 2010

As the saying goes, "It's never an upset when the underdog believes they were going to win all along!" and this was best llustrated by Webster City's 28-10 victory over the Ballard Bombers to improve to 3-0.  The Bombers--who returned a wealth of players from last year's 9-2 squad--took an early 3-0 lead on the strength of their running game.  However, in the 2nd quarter, Lynx RB Keagan Parks scored on a 69-yard romp to give Webster City a 7-3 lead which they held onto until halftime thanks to their bend-but-don't-break defense.  Ballard then reclaimed the lead early in the 3rd quarter, 10-3, but Parks returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards to put Webster City up 14-10.  Playing scrappy on both sides of ball, the Lynx then took a 21-10 lead after WR Sam Mossman hauled in 42-yard pass from QB Johnny Davis.  The Bombers then drove down the field but fumbled the ball in the end zone which the Lynx recovered.  Although Webster City was forced to punt the ball 4 plays later, the defense again stepped up as DB Daniel Stoakes intercepted the next Bomber pass and returned it 65-yards for the final touchdown to secure the 28-10 victory.
Prior to the varsity's victory over Ballard, the Lynx freshman squad won, 26-0, to also improve to 3-0.  Webster City next takes on Boone in Webster City.

Webster City goes unbeaten in non-district play by hammering Iowa Falls-Alden, 35-14,
September 3
, 2010
The Lynx of Webster City improved their record to 2-0 after a sound victory over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets, 35-14, in their first home game of the season.  The Lynx jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead and increased it to 35-7 in the 4th quarter.  The Cadets' bid for a late-game comeback consisting of a long touchdown pass and the recovery of the ensuing kickoff waas thwarted twice by the Lynx inside their own Red Zone.  Webster City next travels to Ballard to take on the Bombers; the two teams last met last season in the Substate game in which Ballard won, 37-7.  The 9th grade freshman team also improved their record to 2-0 after a 44-7 beatdown of the freshmen Cadets.

August 27, 2010
The Webster City Lynx football squad opened up the 2010 season with a 27-7 victory over the Gilbert Tigers in non-district action to improve to 1-0.  The Lynx led at halftime, 20-0, and scored another touchdown in the 4th quarter to take a 27-0 advantage before the Tigers scored with under 3 minutes left in the game.  As a point of fact, this was the first victory in a season opener since 2003.  Next week the Lynx take on the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets in Webster City; IF-A were also 27-7 winners over the Hampton-Dumont Bulldogs.  In other Lynx football action, the Webster City 9th grade team defeated Gilbert, 44-0.

Lynx Nation mourns passing of Harley Rollinger
June 29, 2010

Harley Rollinger will forever be remembered as one of the all-time great coaches to roam the sideline at Webster City High School.  Rollinger, who guided the Lynx football program to six undefeated seasons, a 129-22-5 record and 10 North Central Conference championships during his 18 years as head coach from 1949-66, died Saturday at the age of 87. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron, Ill., with burial to be at the National Cemetery in Rock Island. Visitation will take place Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m.
A native of LeMars, Rollinger came to Webster City in 1948 and served as an assistant coach under Robert Lamson for one year before taking over the Lynx program. Rollinger, who also served as Webster City's athletic director, coached 43 of his Lynx players to all-state honors and in 1961 he was named the Coach of the Year by the Des Moines Register.  Rollinger left Webster City in 1967 to take over the football program at Moline (Ill.) High School, and in his first season the Maroons posted an unbeaten 9-0 mark which is the last blemish-free season in the program's existence.  Moline went 43-9-2 in Rollinger's six seasons as head coach. He continued to work as the school's athletic director at Moline after he hung up his whistle.
Rollinger's coaching legacy brought him numerous other awards, as well as the respect from his peers all across the state. He was inducted into the Iowa High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1969, and in 2008 he was a part of the first class to earn enshrinement into the Webster City Athletics Hall of Fame.  Rollinger was just 19 years of age when he put both his college education and football career on hold to enlist in the aviation cadet program during World War II. He later flew 76 combat missions against the German forces and was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart and the Air Medal with eight Oak Leaf Clusters for his combat efforts. Rollinger was discharged from the Air Force in 1945. He returned to Iowa State University where he was the captain of the football team in 1947.

Six Lynx land on All-District squad
December 2, 2009

Better late then never, but a total of six Lynx earned either 1st or 2nd Team All-District honors.  1st Team selections were:  Nick Erritt (OG), Ben Rasmussen (RB), Kit Paper (LB), and Dalton Keane (DB) while 2nd Team picks were:  James Hartley (OT), Bryan Johnson (TE), Clayton Nessa (DB), and Zach Lind (DB).  Offensively, Erritt was the only sophomore selected and along with Hartley, anchored an offense that rushed for 2,083 total yards and ranked third in District 2.  Rasmussen rushed for 962 yards which ranks him 19th all-time in Lynx history while Johnson hauled in 6 passes for 112 yards for an average of 18.7 yards per catch.  Defensively, Keane had 6 interceptions and along with five other players in Class 3A, was second only to two other players who had 7 total INTs.  Finally, both Paper, Nessa, and Lind led the defense with over 50 total tackles combined.  Congrats to all players for the accomplishments.

Ballard bombards Webster City in Substate game, 37-7
October 28, 2009

The Webster City Lynx finished the 2009 campaign with a 37-7 loss to the Ballard Bombers (9-1) in the Substate game.  The Lynx found themselves down 28-0 before Clayton Nessa scored a 40-yard touchdown run for a halftime score of 28-7.  In the 2nd half, the Bombers scored a touchdown and recorded a safety to finish the game with a 37-7 advantage.  The Lynx finished the season in 3rd place in District 2 with a record of 4-3 and a regular season record of 5-4.  Overall Webster City's record was 5-5 and this is the first back-to-back seasons the Lynx finished with a winning record since 1995 and 1996.  Congratulations to the entire Lynx squad.

Lions roar past Webster City, 40-6; Lynx next prepare for Class 3A Substate Round versus Ballard
October 16, 2009

Facing the #2-ranked team in Class 3A, Webster City (5-4, 4-3) virtually had to play their best game ever to have a chance against the Clear Lake Lions (9-0, 7-0) and unfortunately that didn't happen.  The Lynx found themselves in a hole early and at halftime were down 33-0.  The Lions increased their lead to 40-0 before Webster City blocked a punt and returned it for their lone score to finish the game with a final score of 40-6.  The Lynx, who finished in 3rd place in District 2, next face the Ballard Bombers (8-1) of District 7 at Ballard (8-1) on Wednesday, October 28th at 7:00 pm.

Lynx play flat against Cadets and pay the price
October 16, 2009

The Webster City Lynx lost their second game in row, 21-13, to the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets to drop their overall record to 5-3 while having a District 2 record of 4-2.  The Lynx played mostly flat the entire game, however, at times looked like the team that rattled off five straight wins earlier in the season.  Down 21-13, Webster City had a chance to take the game into Overtime as they drove to the Cadets' 3-yard line with less than a minute in the game but turned the ball over on downs with :02 seconds left.  Next up for Webster City is Clear Lake who is 8-0 and the #2-ranked team in Class 3A.

Comets' 1st Half fury doom Lynx
October 10, 2009

On a cold 2009 Homecoming night, the Webster City Lynx (5-2, 4-1) lost 24-7 to the Charles City Comets (4-3, 4-1).  The Comets jumped out to a 18-0 halftime lead and in the 2nd half, Webster City closed the gap 7-18 with much-improved play; with 6 minutes remaining, the Lynx appeared to be making a comeback as they drove to the 5-yard line before throwing an interception that was returned 90+ yards to seal a 24-7 victory for the Comets.  The Lynx next take on the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets in Iowa Falls next week.

Lynx stop overexcited Go-Hawks 35-0, improve to 5-1 overall
October 2, 2009

The Webster City Lynx football squad improved their District 2 record to 4-0 by knocking the hoopin' and hollerin' out of the Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks, 35-0, on a dreary night at Lynx Stadium.  Webster City posted its first shutout since a 27-0 defeat of Humboldt in Week 7 of the 2001 campaign; incidentally, this is only the Lynx's sixth shutout since 1996.  The Lynx jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game and led 21-0 at halftime.  In the 2nd half, the Lynx defense showcased their resolve by stopping the Go-Hawks twice on 4th and short.  Next week for Homecoming 2009 is the Charles City Comets.

Special plays help Lynx spoil Bulldogs' special night
September 25, 2009

Note to any potential Webster City opponents in 2010:  in the last two seasons, the Lynx have played six Homecoming games and their record in those games now stands at 6-0.  Moving on, the Lynx improved their overall record to 4-1 and are 3-0 in District 2 after a hard-fought victory over Hampton-Dumont, 20-6, on the Bulldogs' Homecoming.  Webster City jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the 1st half and one score was courtesy of a poor Bulldog punt snap inside their own 30-yard line that resulted in a Lynx score.  However, with just :03 seconds to go in the half, Hampton-Dumont punched it in from 1-yard out to close the gap, 14-6.  In the 2nd half, the Lynx had two long drives inside their opponent's Red Zone but were unable to up their lead.  Webster City's defense came up with several big stops--especially when they needed to--and halted the Bulldogs deep inside their own territory on four different occasions.  In the 4th quarter, the Lynx scored their final touchdown after another bad punt snap by Hampton-Dumont put them less then 30-yards from the goal line.  Next up for Webster City is Waverly-Shell Rock at home in Lynx Stadium.

Lynx hammer Algona Bulldogs, 35-6, spoil yet another Homecoming
September 18, 2009

Just four weeks into the season and Webster City got to play the part of Homecoming spoiler as the Lynx (3-1, 2-0) jumped out to a 14-0 lead against the Algona Bulldogs (1-3, 0-2) in the 1st quarter after running back Ben Rasmussen scored from 4-yards out and defensive back Dalton Keane returned an interception for a score.  However, the Bulldogs had an extended drive in the 2nd quarter to close the gap to 14-6 but just prior to the end of the period, Webster City marched over 60 yards in less then three minutes to take a 21-6 halftime advantage.  In the 2nd half, the Lynx--relying on the legs Rasmussen--churned out two more touchdowns while playing stifling defense which included a crucial 4th & 1 stop.  The Lynx, focused on making history now and not concerned about the past--are on the road again when they visit Hampton-Dumont next Friday, September 25.

September 12
, 2009
The Webster City Lynx (1-0/1-1) had an impressive 34-20 victory over the Forest City Indians at Lynx Stadium.  Forest City, which featured a dangerous aerial attack, found themselves down 20-0 prior to halftime before scoring to make it a 20-7 ballgame.  However, to open up the 2nd half, the Lynx scored on their first possession to widen their lead, 27-7.  Although the Indians scored in the 4th quarter to make it a 27-14 contest, Webster City embarked on yet another long scoring drive to take a 34-14 lead and drove once more to their opponent's 1-yard line before turning the ball over; the Indians then scored in the waning minutes of the ballgame for a 34-20 final outcome.  The Lynx next take on the Algona Bulldogs (0-1/1-2) in Algona next week.

Down 13-0 at halftime, the Webster City Lynx (1-1) rallied in the second half against the Eagle Grove Eagles (1-1) to notch their first victory of the 2009 season, 14-13.  The Lynx played excellent defense--except for two plays--as they virtually shut down the Eagles' option offense.  Although Webster City's offense had a difficult time moving the ball in the 1st half, they rebounded after halftime.  Next up for the Lynx are the Forest City Indians (2-0) which will be the first District 2 game of the season.

Webster City battles Carroll to the end but come up short, 41-26
November 4, 2008

The Webster City Lynx (7-4) were defeated by the Carroll Tigers (11-0) in a hard-fought Class 3A 1st Round game that was literally a tale of two halfs.  In the 1st quarter, the Tigers jumped out to an early 21-0 lead before the Lynx begin battling back and by halftime the score was 35-20.  In the 2nd half the Lynx continued to fight and eventually narrowed the score, 35-26, but failed to score on two other opportunities inside the Tiger's Red Zone; with less than a minute in the game, Carroll scored their final touchdown after the Lynx failed to convert a 4th & 18 inside their own 30-yard line and thus end Webster City's remarkable season. Congratulations to Coach Bob Howard and the 2008 Lynx for their accomplishments which include reviving Lynx Football!

Lynx to face Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs in Substate game
October 24, 2008

District 2 Runner-up and No. 2 seed Webster City (6-3) will host District 7 and No. 3 seed Dallas Center-Grimes (7-2)  this coming Wednesday, October 29th, in the Class 3A Substate game; the two teams are no strangers to one another as in 2006-07 the Mustangs and Lynx were in the same District.  Kickoff is at 7:00 pm.

Lynx outplayed by Lions, 31-6, finish regular season 6-3 and District 2 Runners-up
October 24, 2008

It wasn't the season-final and District Championship game Webster City (6-3, 5-2) had envisioned and Clear Lake (9-0, 7-0) certainly proved why they are the #2-ranked team in Class 3A with a 31-6 victory over the Lynx.  The Lynx found themselves down 24-0 by halftime and although they opened up the second half by marching 75-yards down the field and scoring to narrow the gap 24-6, Clear Lake's offense was too much as they scored on their next possession to put the game out of reach, 31-6.  Webster City, the District 2 Runner-up, now prepare for their Class 3A Substate game that will be held at Lynx Stadium next Wednesday, October 29th @ 7:00 pm.
