• In 1896 there were very few high school teams with football squads that it was necessary to schedule teams that in the present era would be considered too far strong of competition for high school boys
• Players had to furnish their own equipment and managed to get little or no coaching from instructors as school... however, if the teacher showed a little stuff, they were allowed to play on the team
