State Champions
To date, only one Webster City Lynx Football squad has
earned the title of "State Champions" and it was done prior to the 1972
implementation of the Iowa High School Football playoffs.
The 1936 squad, coached by Robert Lamson, was not only the first Lynx team to go
8-0 and undefeated
in school history, but during the '36 season they were also unscored upon which—to date—is a feat only shared by 13
other prep squads in the history of Iowa high school football.
Led by
two-time All-State quarterback Ralph Frank, the '36 squad outscored their
opponents 262-0 en route to an 8-0 record and was the only team besides Perry to finish
unbeaten that year; however, because neither the Bluejays' offense nor defense
matched what Webster City accomplished, the Lynx were crowned as the 1936 Iowa
State Champions.
